STEM Racing will continue to drive positive change and inspire the next generation alongside Formula 1, and the core mission of the programme remains to enable students worldwide to pursue STEM subjects in their education with a view to a potential career in motorsport. Through the programme, which is designed for teachers and informed by engineers, students aged 6-19 gain insight in areas of STEM through the creation of a miniature F1 car. Working in small groups, either within classroom learning or in extracurricular activities, students put their own version of an F1 team together where they are assigned roles and responsibilities, such as designing the car, manufacturing it, testing it, branding it, or even becoming the Team Principal to ensure everything runs smoothly. Teams then race against each other and present their cars and wider projects to a panel of judges.
Operating globally, teams showcase their work in regional and national competitions, with the goal of competing in the prestigious World Finals. This year evolut1on, from Germany, were crowned champions at the finals hosted in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. The evolut1on team, and other select students, then had the opportunity to visit the FORMULA 1 QATAR AIRWAYS QATAR GRAND PRIX 2024 at the Lusail International Circuit to get up close and personal with the world of Formula 1. The programme will continue to bring students into the Paddock at Grands Prix around the world, providing hands-on experiences in the world of motorsport and insight from industry personnel.
The support of STEM Racing further enhances the efforts of Formula 1 to provide opportunities for young people and those from underrepresented backgrounds to help break down barriers into the motorsport industry by embedding an understanding and excitement for STEM at all levels of education. From school programmes through to scholarships, the Formula 1 community works together to inspire the next generation to pursue their education in our outreach work.
Ellen Jones, Head of ESG, Formula 1 said:
“Education is the cornerstone of the future of F1 and this is why we are so passionate about empowering future generations globally to pursue their dreams in STEM and motorsport. The support for STEM Racing will build on the fantastic work that has already been done over two decades and is the latest example of how we are continuing to make pathways for young people around the world to achieve their goals and show them what is possible.”
Andrew Denford, Founder and Chairman of STEM Racing, commented:
“We’re delighted to become an organisation that is officially supported by Formula 1, continuing our mission to inspire future generations to explore STEM and unlock their full potential. STEM Racing will bring the excitement of motorsport and Formula 1 directly into classrooms and through hands-on events both on and off the grid where we hope to spark a passion for a future career in motorsport in young people around the world.”
